Shelton wants oversight hearing for parole board

Posted: Updated:

Sen. Amanda Shelton is calling for an oversight hearing with the Parole Board. Paul Mafnas was sentenced to 27 years for his 1999 conviction of kidnapping and criminal sexual conduct. There were a total of four victims. He pleaded guilty.

He only served about 18 years in jail, because the parole board in 2014 granted him parole. Mafnas admitted that he had addiction to sexually abusing minors.

Sen. Shelton sent a letter to her colleague Sen. Therese Terlaje requesting the oversight to examine the parole board's processes and enact legislation to ensure that predators with self-described "addictions" to sexually assaulting children are never put back on our streets again.

Meanwhile, Sen. Terlaje says prior to receiving her colleague's letter she had already set a May 6 date to hold a roundtable meeting on the issue.

She is also inquiring with the Office of the Attorney General to determine if the proper procedures were followed in the Mafnas case.
