Aguigui appointed to colonel (GU)

Posted: Updated:

Adjutant Gen. Esther Aguigui was promoted to the rank of colonel (GU) this morning in a pinning ceremony at Adelup.

According to governor’s spokeswoman Janela Carrera, the promotion was a “state promotion” granted by Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero.

The promotion is pending federal approval from the Chief of The National Guard Bureau.

Since it is a state promotion pending federal approval, the rank granted to Aguigui is Colonel (GU) - the parentheses indicating her promotion is a state promotion, Carrera said.

The governor performed the pinning in a ceremony at Adelup. The ceremony was not announced to the media or the public.

"We wanted to have an intimate-type setting since it's pending federal recognition. When it's federally approved, we'll have a big ceremony," Carrera said.

Aguigui was appointed adjutant general by the governor after the resignation of former Adjutant Gen. Roderick Leon Guerrero.

Roderick Leon Guerrero was originally named as the Leon Guerrero-Tenorio’s pick to lead the National Guard and touted as an “Agent of Change” by the Leon Guerrero/Tenorio Administration.

Aguigui was a lieutenant colonel when she was appointed as adjutant general. An appointee to the adjutant general position must have a rank of lieutenant colonel (O5) and also must have a status of “promotable,” according to Guam law.
