Women now control every branch of local government

Posted: Updated:

It was a historic inauguration at the Guam Congress Building. Members of the 35th Legislature were sworn in, highlighted by the first-ever women super-majority.

Ten women and five men make up the new legislature. Seven of the female senators are members of the majority Democrats, and three from the minority Republicans.

Sen. Tina Muna Barnes was the only nominee and the unanimous choice for speaker. She notes that women now control every branch of the local government.

"Making history with the majority women in the legislature, a female governor, a female chief justice, a female federal judge, a female president of the Mayors Council of Guam," she said. That in itself speaks volumes, but for me that is not enough. History is being made every day. Let us work together, continue to make history Take our island to heights that she has never reached before."

The Democrats also own a 10-to-5 legislative super-majority, which could bode well for the incoming administration of fellow Democrat, Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero, though Speaker Barnes in her speech pledged to uphold the legislature's checks and balance responsibility.

"I am so honored and humbled to be able to work closely with our maga'haga," she said.

Selected as vice-speaker was Sen.Telena Nelson, and legislative secretary was Sen. Amanda Shelton. The 35th legislature features five freshman senators, seven second-term incumbents, and two former senators, including Speaker Barnes.
