Guardsman's selfless heroism during traffic accident recognized

Posted: Updated:

A Guam National Guard soldier received a rare special award for bravery and heroism. Adjutant General Roderick Leon Guerrero presented the Cross of Valor to Sergeant Jerome Carriaga in a ceremony Monday attended by family and fellow soldiers. Carriaga was recognized for his role in assisting with a serious traffic accident in Barrigada back in February.

He says he was on his way to work, and saw a collision between a dump truck and an SUV. Carriaga says he had no time to think, he just sprung into action, saying, "I immediately stopped, ran up, checked the driver. He was good, so the car that got hit was rolling into the road, of course took action to get it to stop. Stopped vehicles from stopping by and conducted, checked out the person that got hit.

"I didn't know I was getting this award. Didn't do it for the recognition, just trying to do the right thing every day."

The Guam National Guard says this is the first time the Cross of Valor has been awarded.
