Typhoon could hit Guam Tuesday

The National Weather Service held a heavy weather briefing at Civil Defense this afternoon. The NWS announced that Guam is looking at a possible Category 3 or Category 4 Typhoon should it pass over Guam on Tuesday, September 11th.

Expected damage for a Category 3 Typhoon could include:
-Sustained winds of 111-129mph, gusts up to 140-164mph.
-Total destruction of structures made of light materials.
-Strong rip currents: 12-15 feet or coastal flooding

Expected damage for a Category 4 Typhoon:
-Sustained winds of 135-156mph, gusts up to 165-198 mph.
-Extensive damage to wooden structures
-Total destruction of structures made of light materials.
-Deadly rip currents: 15-18 feet of coastal flooding

NWS’ Landon Aydlett says we could be dealing with a potentially bad situation for Guam and the entire Mariana Islands. He adds that this could be the worst hit in a decade.

Island residents are urged to take necessary safety precautions now. Watches and warnings are expected to be issued this weekend.
