Fees increasing for military foreign labor applications

Another of the new laws signed by the Governor increases the fees on foreign labor applications strictly for military projects.

The measure by Senator Regine Biscoe Lee would help fund local worker training programs at GCC and the Labor department.

The issue came up during a budget hearing Wednesday.  Labor officials confirmed the last H2 worker has left, but they expect that number to climb back to about 1,500 by the new fiscal year in October.

Alien Labor processing and certification administrator Greg Massey says filings have been slow.

"You know, there's been that chilling effect for two years, and the ice hasn't completely melted from that chilling effect so I expected  employers to start coming in in droves, and the pace is kind of slow still," said Massey.

But Massey says by next year they expect the number of workers to soar to about 4,300.
