Memorial ceremony held for victims of Chaguian massacre

Posted: Updated:

Liberation Day may be over but every year they return to Yigo.. so that we always remember.

It marks the final memorial ceremony closing out the island's commemoration of 73 years of liberation from the Japanese Occupation of Guam during World War II. Yigo mayor Rudy Matanane said, "For four years the banner as the forgotten heroes we changed it to remembering the victims and that's what it's going to be for forever."

The memorial service was held at the Chaguian Massacre site in Yigo. A total of 50 men were forced to march here from the Manenggon Concentration camp in Yona. Five managed to escape while the remaining 45 were decapitated. Although they were identified, research conducted by Chaguian Memorial Service Committee Chairperson John Blaz indicates there's a mass grave located on the property.

"In the past week I've been in touch with the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, Virginia with the Historical Division," he confirmed. "And they just replied to me the other day via email that they found a record of the 21st Marine Regiment, it's very voluminous, a lot."

But in those records, Blaz says contains important data provided to the military by one of the men who escaped. His name was Enrique Taitano Cruz. You see days after the massacre the military brought him back to Yigo, to identify the men who were beheaded now because of this.Blaz says the records should reflect something no one has been able to uncover.

"It may tell me the grid coordinates of the mass burial," he shared.

And if that's the case, Blaz says a shrine can be erected to honor the forever remembered 45. He's hoping to receive the information any time now.
