GPD struggles to find funds to pay OT

by Nick Delgado

Guam - The Guam Police Department may have to stretch its operations budget to pay a $50,000 fine to the U.S. Department of Labor for failing to pay overtime for last fiscal year. The local agency was slapped with the fine for not paying more than $200,000 in overtime to more than 200 of its officers.

While GPD Captain Mark Charfauros says they are working with the Governor's Office to get the overdue OT paid out, he admits they are still not sure where they will get the money to pay the fine. He told KUAM News, "There is an issue of whether or not the governor wants to contest the fines. I'm not privy to that, that's in the governor's right to do so, what I am preparing for the chief, if we are going to be forced to pay the fine, the letter would be to be see if we can have a deferment."

GPD has less than 30 days to pay the fine or may face interests and penalties.
