Charter school legislation proposed

GUAM - Speaker Judi Won Pat and Senator Tina Muna Barnes introduced legislation which would amend petition submission dates for the establishment of charter schools for school year 2010–2011. Bill 308 would now give eligible applicants seeking to establish a charter school until March 8th to submit their petitions.

Speaker Won Pat says they are currently looking for an accountant, a retired school administrator and a retired teacher to serve on the charter school council.

"There are a lot of individuals that seem to be interested; it's just that the obligations have not gone in and I know they don't want the time to do just that. I know that it's a lengthy application, but I think that when its done, it will be well worth it," Won Pat clarified.

Charter schools are public funded elementary and secondary schools that aren't constrained by some of the rules, regulations and statutes that apply to other public schools.
