Essential listening:
The KUAM team's top albums of all time

Marie Calvo-Monge
KUAM Executive Producer

This may seem like a random grab-bag of music, but it represents all the experiences I've had so far in my life.

I'd like to think that the diversity reflects my open mind and willingness to try or listen to new things.

1 A Tribe Called Quest – "People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm"
A modern hip hop classic with beats and lyrics that can’t be forgotten – “Bonita Applebum” and “Can I Kick It?” are two of my favorite songs on the album
2 2Pac – "All Eyes on Me"
The last album from a hip hop legend and his only album with Death Row (released while he was alive). To me, this was not your typical gangsta rap but a collection a songs from a truly talented artist. I could listen to both CD’s over and over again without getting sick of it.
3 De La Soul – "De La Soul is Dead"
“Saturdays” was the jam in High School!
4 Mary J. Blige – "What’s the 411?"
Almost every song brings back memories of the place I was at in my life when this album was released. That’s powerful music!!!
5 Lauren Hill – "The Miseducation of Lauren Hill"
The combination of her strength and femininity are reflected in her beautiful voice. Her music is inspiring.
6 Diggable Planets – "Reachin’"
Introspective hip hop…I love this album!
7 Natalie Merchant – "Tigerlily"
The songs on this album are so soothing. They have a lullaby quality to them.
8 Erykah Badu – "Baduizm"
Another strong woman with a beautifully unique voice. “Appletree” and “Next Lifetime” are my favorite songs on this album.
9 The Cure – "Standing on a Beach"
Who hasn’t liked The Cure at some point in their life? For me, this was my favorite albums of theirs. I liked the variety of songs in this album from “Boys Don’t Cry” to “LoveCats”.
10 Pretty in Pink - "Motion Picture Soundtrack"
This album is a quintessential reflection of early adolescent life for me.
Honorable mentions:
  • Madonna – "Like A Prayer"
  • Chaka Khan – "Epiphany"
  • Guns n’ Roses – "Appetite for Destruction"
  • D’angelo – "Brown Sugar"
  • Grease – "Motion Picture Soundtrack"
