Guam could soon have non stop flights to the U.S. mainland. Airport executive manager Carlos Salas confirms with KUAM that discussions with an undisclosed airline are underway to begin direct flights from Guam to the U.S. mainland as early as 2011. The flights would be in line with the expected influx of thousands of military personnel and their families.

Salas states, "There are very significant discussions on this long haul trans-Pacific flights from Asia to the U.S. mainland via Guam. What that means is the flight would stop in Guam and fly direct to the U.S. mainland."

With the airport's ongoing runway expansion project that would extend the current runway from ten to 12 thousand feet, larger aircraft would be able to take off at full pay load and go directly to the mainland.

Salas says the airport is working to provide the necessary infrastructure but it will be up to the airlines to make these flights possible for island residents.
