University of Guam launches new REEF Internship program to expand sustainability beyond science majors

The University Of Guam’s Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant has launched a new undergraduate internship program that opens doors for students outside the sciences.

Called the Research Education and Extension Fellowship, or REEF program, the initiative focuses on an interdisciplinary approach to sustainability, bringing together students from various fields including psychology, engineering, and business.

Director Dr. Austin Shelton says the program shows that sustainable development is everyone’s responsibility, not just for science majors. 

He added that reef provides a foundation for careers in any field, with hands-on experience and mentorship in sustainability.

As part of the 20-week paid fellowship, participants will work with industry mentors on projects in conservation, waste management, and regional sustainability issues.

Uog Provost Dr. Sharleen Santos-Bamba praised the fellows, saying the program is an investment in the next generation, one that encourages them to pay it forward and promote sustainability within their communities.
