The island celebrated emergency medical services week by showing appreciation to our unsung heroes: Guam's first responders. The EMS for Children’s Day Health Fair was held at Micronesia Mall earlier this week following the annual parade of lights.

Island heroes educated the community on what they do by providing hands on opportunities and demonstrations at the health fair. From learning how to apply a tourniquet, to performing CPR and booths providing resources from Public Health, our unsung heroes brought emergency medical education to life.

Sally Westcott, the EMS committee chair, said, "We’re here for you. And we like to be there on days where you’re not experiencing any of that, so that’s why we’re her today. So come on down and see us when you’re not having the worst day of your life."

Sisters Elsa and Ellina Aguon learned what to do in case of emergencies. ELSA said, "My favorite part is that I get to learn about stuff that I might need," adding, "thank you for making us learning something new."

And Ellina’s favorite part? She said, "the candies!"

They were also joined by their father, Albert Aguon, who said, "Like have this kind of thing more often… even to go out to schools… for everybody to know what is all the safeties and stuff like that that are there."

The community walks away from the health fair learning life saving skills like how to stop the bleed.

Without Guam’s unsung heroes, locals wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience hands on what they do for the island.
