The family of Charles Richard Eugene Lacy is heartbroken. Not just over his murder, but over how they learned he was the victim.
Brenda Lacy Adams, Lacy's sister who lives in Washington state, says she found out during Tuesday's GPD press conference, the same way the public did.
She was at work, watching KUAM’s livestream on Facebook, when the confirmation was made.
The family had been waiting for months. On Nov. 1, 2024, GPD responded to a burning body found along Faa Road in Dededo.
Days later, on Nov. 8, they released images of tattoos, hoping someone could identify the victim.
It was Lacy's ex-girlfriend who saw KUAM’s story and shared it with the family. His son recognized the tattoos. That same day, they contacted GPD.
“We've been in contact with them ever since and every single time even if we just ask-is it him? They won't tell us,” said Brenda.
The family did not know for certain it was Lacy until Tuesday's GPD press conference. She says that the family had their suspicions it was their loved one but without the notification, there was that ounce of hope.
They also asked for details about how he died. Brenda said the last time she messaged a detective was April 22 and never got a response.
“We were hoping that, I know it sounds mean, that he was shot or killed first before they set him on fire because that's one of the worst ways to be killed,” said Brenda. “I can't imagine the pain he went through.”
Although she admits her brother was far from perfect and battled his demons, Brenda adds, “Nobody deserves this. Nobody deserves what happened to him.”
Her message to Chief Ignacio and the detectives?
“They need to do better. They need to make sure the family is aware before the press conference. Their press con should not override the family knowing first. I'm happy they caught him---good. Let the justice proceed. And his fate be given to him.... but we should have been told,” said Brenda.
KUAM reached out to GPD to provide a statement, who said they have no additional comments.
