A large plume of smoke is seen billowing into the air from Cocos Island Tuesday morning.

The E911 center received multiple phone calls about a possible fire on the island located just off Malesso at 10:28 p.m.

According to Guam Fire Department spokesperson Lt. Nick Garrdio, GFD Rescue and Engine personnel are responding via the GFD Rescue Vessel to conduct an assessment to determine their course of action.

Additionally, the Department of Agriculture Aquatic & Wildlife Division will be utilizing their vessel to bring DOAG Forestry Division to assist with the efforts.

Officials remind the community that a red flag warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday for extreme fire weather danger for Guam.

Authorities note any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
