Arguably the most powerful man in the world of sports arrived on island to meet with the organization that's taking soccer to the next level and seeing with his own eyes the progress that's been made and what lies ahead. Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, the governing body of international football, led a delegation on Sunday afternoon, meeting the board and leadership of the Guam Football Association at the GFA National Training Center in Harmon.
FIFA has financially supported Guam's efforts for player development, the establishment of national team programs, building a world-class training and competition facility used at all levels of football, and competing in qualifiers and hosting international matches.
President Infantino was also briefed on the extensive damage to the GFA's center caused by Typhoon Mawar this past May, including fields and lighting systems.
"Almost a year ago, I was handing over the World Cup to Leo Messi in Qatar...and then four months ago I handed the World Cup over to Spain for the Women's World Cup in Sydney," the president said to the Guam board. "And I can tell you all that you are all world champions for the children here in Guam - with your commitment, with your passion, and with your work."
