Attention all licensed hunters!
The Guam Department of Agriculture is gearing up for its annual Field to Fork Hunting Derby, set to take place this Saturday, Nov. 18.
Megan Volsteadt from Agriculture's Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources provided insights into the preparations for this highly anticipated event.
“This year, we’re going to try to do four derbies this year; usually it’s two. For this derby, the main focus will be binadu or the deer. But we do know that deer aren’t easy to find, track or catch. And a lot of people will mostly see pigs. so if you see a pig and shoot a pig, you can bring it in and we will count 75 percent of its weight towards your points.”
The derby is part of DOA’s Hunter Education Program to recruit, reactivate, and retain local hunters. Additionally, it helps deal with the nuisance feral pig population.
The binaudu and babui Hunting Derby is this Saturday, Nov. 18.
Derby check stations are at the Yigo senior citizen center and the old fire station in Agat (Sagan Bisita).
Mandatory safety briefings along with pre-registration will be held tomorrow, Nov. 14, at the Mangilao community center and on Wednesday at the Yigo senior citizen center.
For those who can’t make those safety briefings, one will also be held on the morning of the hunt.
