Guam to get $100K in Honda settlement

Guam is receiving $100,000 from the multistate settlement with Honda, the Office of the Attorney General made the announcement this week. It’s the largest settlement Guam has received from a consumer protection case, according to a release.

The settlement stems from allegations of Honda hiding safety issues, particularly related to defects with front airbag systems in certain Honda and Acura vehicles. In the release, the settlement concludes a multistate investigation into Honda’s alleged failure to inform consumers of the significant risk of rupture, causing metal fragments to fly into the passenger side of vehicles. Ruptures resulted in at least 14 deaths and over 200 injuries in the U.S.
Honda, ultimately, agreed to injunctive relief.

Guam’s share of the settlement will be used to fund the OAG’s ongoing consumer protection work.

“We will take action against companies who put profit above the safety of consumers," Attorney General Leevin Camacho said. "This settlement - the largest local consumer protection settlement in recent history - shows that our office’s active involvement in multistate investigations and litigation ultimately benefit Guam consumers.”

If you own a Honda or Acura car, you are strongly encouraged to visit Honda’s airbag recall website at https://hondaairbaginfo.com, or call its Customer Service toll-free number at (888) 234-2138, to see if their vehicle is subject to a recall. Consumers may also contact the Consumer Protection Division via email at [email protected] or call 475-3324 with any questions regarding the settlement.
