Local Catholics will celebrate the official recognition of His Excellency Archbishop Michael Byrnes as the shepherd of the island's faithful during a historic mass this Sunday. The Investiture of the Sacred Pallium will formally confer Byrnes, who has been serving on Guam since November of 2016.
He officially became archbishop of Agana last April.
"A pallium is a three-inch-wide band worn around the neck and shoulders that is conferred to newly named archbishops," a press release from the archdiocese explained. "It is worn over Mass vestments and symbolizes an archbishop's unity with the pope and his authority and responsibility to care for the flock the pope entrusted to him. The pallium signifies the sheep the archbishop symbolically carries, as Christ the Good Shepherd did."
You can livestream the mass from the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica in Hagatna at starting 2pm on the KUAM News Facebook page and also broadcast on KUAM-TV8 and KUAM-TV11.
