It's a summer "Spaycation" at Guam Animals in Need where a team of veterinarians and visiting students are providing month-long spay and neuter services at a low cost by appointment now through July 26.

"I know that a lot of people do not think of getting their animals spayed or neutered because of the costs, so come get it while it is cheap," snip coordinator Samantha Mullen.

The clinic at Ordot-Chalan Pago Community Center treated 25 animals in its third day of surgery. Their team is expecting to spay and neuter about 150 dogs and cats.

"We have recruited 12 Veterinary students to come out in two different sessions this month," Mullen said. "They are learning from highly trained, awesome, high-quality spay and neuter veterinarians."

The island is home to a sizable stray dog and feral cat population. The clinic's process in addressing it: intake the animal, conduct a physical exam, put them on pain meds, and then conduct the surgery. It can take anywhere between 5 to 30 minutes.

Hilary Chan is a volunteer from Western University in California.

"We want to lower the amount of dogs and cats on the streets and make sure they do go to good homes if possible," she said.

Fellow volunteer Kara Agaimaite says it's also a public health matter.

"Health benefits, in general, include reducing population and possibilities for cancers because of any animal that is not neutered or spayed. There are also diseases spread that way so we want to minimize all that." 2:25

Services are just $40 per animal. You can email [email protected] to schedule an appointment.
