Gatorade Gamechangers: Pool’s transition to wrestling golden

After excelling in golf, swimming and tennis, Tommy decided he wanted to test himself.

“Up until that point, I was always a golfer or tennis player or swimmer – not exactly a contact sports type of person,” Tommy said. “So I just thought I might as well pick up a contact sport and test myself to see if I could do it, and that’s how I got into wrestling.”

Tommy is a junior from Harvest Christian Academy who wrestles for Father Duenas. In just his second year of wrestling, Tommy won All-Island Gold in the 170-pound division. He has attended every wrestling camp at FD and competed in the Moanoloa High School Wrestling Tournament in Hawaii, winning four of his six matches.

“Taking wrestling up to that kind of level and seeing all those guys wrestle – and they are very skilled out there – and it certainly something that I always try and compare myself to and to always try to strive for to become like them,” Tommy said.

Tommy was also impressed with how he was accepted at FD.

“I was completely amazed at how accepting everybody was of the fact that I came from a different school and that I was wrestling for them,” Tommy said. “It was very surprising to me and even now it continues to surprise me how I fit in so well.”

Tommy grew up hunting, fishing, swimming, golfing and playing tennis. He has been part of Guam’s Junior Golf Program since he was in the first grade.

While he has proven to be a gifted athlete, Tommy says academics are more important to him – and it shows. He was on Harvest’s Academic Challenge Bowl team, he placed second in the Physical Science category of the All-Island Science Fair.

Tommy rocks a 3.9 GPA as a Harvest junior.

“I think it’s very important to have a secured future,” Tommy said of his academics. “That’s the main goal we’re striving for is having a better future. Whether that is academics or athletics and especially in the academics department, we got to get those grades up and homework in – in order to really have a shot at getting places in life.”

Tommy will definitely be going places. With his drive to win, and a good head on his shoulders, look for Tommy to go places and get there soon – and that’s what makes Tommy Pool a Gatorade Game Changer.
