The woman accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the St. Francis Catholic Church in Yona has pleaded not guilty. 60-year-old Veranice Toves appeared in court today where she waived her right to a speedy trial. Toves was indicted on nearly two dozen charges, including theft, forgery, and deception, most of which are felonies.
The last time Toves appeared in court, prosecutors reported Toves stated the church gave her their blessing to misappropriate church funds. The Yona priest, however, provided a written statement denying Toves' statements. Prosecutors also suspect Toves may be faking cancer in order to get out of jail time.
Her next court appearance is set for March 29.
