Guam - The Department of Education went before lawmakers this morning with a budget request for $298.8 million for the next fiscal year. DOE superintendent Jon Fernandez says this is $76 million or 34% more than FY14's appropriations.

He told KUAM News, "So we've been doing our best and managing to avoid any interruption in our operations but we're getting to a point where we're going to have to make sure we correct this problem, allow us to catch up to those obligations and ensure that it doesn't happen again in a future appropriation."

He adds DOE has been short $13 million over two fiscal years tied to revenues from the property evaluation that will not be completed until the next fiscal year. A significant chunk of the budget request will go toward supporting school facilities and deferred maintenance.
