Over 170 participate in XTERRA Guam

Guam - 172 athletes, professional and amateur competed in the 2014 XTERRA Guam. This was the 10th anniversary of the race with competitors representing 11 different countries. The race started at the Port Authority Beach in Piti with a 1.5k swim, 35k mountain bike ride up Nimitz Hill, into the technical terrain of Mt. Aluton, then down through Mannengnon Hills and then transitioned into a 8.2k trail run through the jungle rivers and slippery waterfalls. There was $15,000.00 worth of prize money up for grabs with this year's winner Dan Hugo from South Africa taking the top spot with a finishing time of 2:28 minutes, teammate Bradley Weiss finished in 2nd with a time of 2:35 while New Zealand's Oliver Shaw placed 3rd with a time of 2:39.

Dan Hugo from South Africa told KUAM Sports, "I said it in the press briefing that the heat and humidity here is probably the biggest factor and we were really lucky because today was lovely. You know everything went to plan today it was one of those days that I'm going to enjoy. On the run there was 3 or 4 deep pools and it was almost like you were swimming and it was just so cool and beautiful. I wish there were more cameras to see that bamboo and that water, it was very unique and today was a real treat. A big thanks to Eric and his team and everybody here, it was a super memorable day and I am very glad to come back to Guam a second time and win this occasion so thank you so much."

On the women's side Switzerland's Renata Bucher placed first with a finishing time of 3:03, Guam's Meiko Carey took 2nd at 3:04, Austria's Carina Wasle placed 3rd with a time of 3:15.
