Guam - A little over a year in the making, the Mayors Council of Guam has completed a project that will have residents flying high with island pride. It's a project that allows island villages to showcase what they represent from Yigo to Merizo: flags illustrating key landmarks and historic sites.
After a little over a year and with $9,000 set aside for the project, the 19 village flags are finally completed. Currently there is on going discussion about the procurement of the flags and where they will be placed. The Council enlisted the help of local artist Gerard Aflague to help design the flags, with the funding coming from a grant from the Guam Visitors Bureau as part of the "We Are Guam" campaign.
Tamuning, Tumon and Harmon vice mayor Louise Rivera told KUAM News, "We are hoping a full set here at the mayor's council office, I know it's being procured so we'll be following up on it when it will arrive, all 19 flags to be placed here for everybody to see."
From design to production each flag cost $350. According to Mayors Council of Guam president and Dededo mayor Melissa Savares, that leaves $2,500 left in remaining grant money. "We are looking at, we will now look, with the left over money that is there, to see if there is enough money to buy 50 or 100 handheld flags that they can use to wave in their villages as their doing activities and whatnot," she said.
Already each mayor was given a 4-x-6 flag to place in their respective village. It's up to the mayors to purchase additional ones. To read up on the significance and design of each flag at flagsofguam.wordpress.com or to purchase online visit gerardaflaguecollection.com/flags.
