Changes sought for Shark Conservation Act

by Mindy Aguon

Guam - Island fishermen are facing more restrictions when they head out into the deep blue sea. With President Barack Obama's signature on the Shark Conservation Act of 2010, fishermen will have a difficult time bringing sharks back to the shore.

The measure, introduced by Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo, prevents fishermen from cutting up sharks before bringing them back to the shore. Fishermen tell KUAM News they often cut the fins and other pieces of the shark to fit them into coolers.

While the law strengthens the enforcement of shark finning, local fishermen have asked the congresswoman to make an amendment to the law.
