Guam - The Guam Police Department got some new rides today, as the agency now has 14 Crown Victorias paid by compact impact funds. Each went for about $34,000 a pop, but it's going to take about a month longer before they're actually street ready since they still need to be outfitted for police needs.
Lieutenant Andrew Quitugua said, "The patrolmen they don't deserve anything that's less than the equipment that's able to perform the functions that they are suppose to be performing on the road right now. So we're pretty excited to get them what they need and we're looking to get some more."
And now for the backstory behind these new police cruisers: their purchase was the subject of a legislative inquiry because former police chief Frank Ishizaki changed the bids multiple times until it was finally awarded to one particular vendor. During a legislative hearing it was further revealed that the Crown Victorias will be discontinued next year.
GPD told senators they would use old parts from inoperable cruisers to maintain their current fleet. No word on how much more GPD will have to pay to outfit the 14 new Crown Victorias so they are street ready.
