Time: 1 hour and 40 minutes
Genre: Drama, Musical
Starring: Christina Aguilera, Cam Gigandet, Cher, Stanley Tucci
Musical diva Christina Aguilera joins a star-studded cast of talented performers in the cliche-ridden film, "Burlesque". Unfortunately, a break-through performance from Aguilera, top-notch acting from Tucci, and core role-playing from the supporting cast cannot save "Burlesque" from its lack of originality.
Alice (Christina Aguilera) is a small-town girl who moves to L. A. in search of her dream in show business. A talented singer and a hard worker, "Ali" finds her way to the Burlesque Lounge, an inspiring theater of dance and flamboyant costumes. After getting a job as a waitress from Tess (Cher), the owner of Burlesque, Ali attempts to make the cut to perform in the dying show.
"Burlesque" features incredibly powerful singing and dance numbers from the cast. Aguilera proves that her vocal range is up there with the best of them and her soulful delivery will leave you impressed. Cher does a couple of musical numbers as well. The costumes are incredible, and the dance numbers are steamy. But that is where "Burlesque" begins to fall. The story has been done 100 times before and the film makes no attempt to differentiate itself from its predecessors. In fact, "Burlesque" brings nothing new to the table aside from showing off the talented voices of Cher and Christina Aguilera.
Tacky and cliche-ridden, "Burlesque" is naked and barren of original thought -- Much like the performers of the club.
2 out of 5 stars.
