Guam - A group of University of Guam students are doing their part to promote the "Go Green" movement by participating in internships sponsored by the UOG Green Initiative.  The effort is a program that focuses on promoting campus awareness of environmental matters such as recycling, energy efficiency, and alternative energy.

UOG Green Intern Alexandra Kerr talked about the ongoing energy auditing led by president of EnTech, Inc., James W. Cafky.  She said, "Right now, we're doing energy auditing training. So we're in the process of going through all the buildings on campus, and just gauging how much energy each building is using and in that way we'll be able to retrofit the buildings in the best way possible where UOG can save money and save energy as well."

Aside from learning how to audit energy, another green intern, Michael Conner, says they recently went "dumpster diving" around the campus in an effort to sort through discarded material that could possibly be recycled.  "I've always been really concerned with the environment on Guam," he said.  "I've watched several documentaries regarding global warming and it's always been a concern to me.  And it's really sad to see that a lot of people do not seem to care.  And I'm just hoping that I can promote that and make it better."

An intern since last December, Kerr adds that one of their upcoming projects include speaking to children attending UOG's summer camps as a way of creating a greener awareness.  She explained, "We're presenting short presentations on how they can recycle. Exactly what is recycling, exactly what is sustainability and hopefully they can take that with them to their schools during the fall semester."
