Also known as freerunning, Parkour originated in France and involves moving from Point A to Point B in the most efficient way possible, often on sprawling urban landscapes. While Parkour takes place outdoors, it has a large presence online. Guam PK founder Jason Triplett says that without the advent of video sharing sites like YouTube, Parkour may never have become the phenomenon it is today.
He told KUAM News, "The Internet plays a big role for Parkour, that's how it's globally known the spread using YouTube alone is, it's a huge hit on the Internet. I mean, that's how we show off to each other, that's how we inspire each other. On Saturday, Guam-PK will host a workshop at the Ypao Beach Park in Tumon from 10am to noon. The event is part of a global Parkour jam organized online with participants all over the world.
"ParkourGenerations.com is throwing out this global Internet Parkour community event, as well and we're going to go in and show support here on Guam by showing that we care about this island," said Triplett.
Aside from increasing awareness about Parkour, the event will also focus on environmental awareness with a trash cleanup and recycling drive, which Triplett says is all part of the foundation of Parkour.
"Our whole motto is 'Leave it better than when you arrived' because we're jumping over people's property and using it as our playground, and the whole idea is to take care of where you're at, your environment and that's what Parkour's all about," he explained.
