University of Guam promotes human rights awareness in annual film festival

by Janjeera Hail
April 22, 2005

The next two weekends will provide Guam residents with the opportunity to view eight international, award-winning films. These films, being shown at the University of Guam Lecture Hall, aim to spread awareness of human rights issues across the globe.

Coordinator Stephanie Mansfield said, "This is our third annual film festival hosted in Guam and its just bringing to Guam some films that don't usually make it to mainstream theatres. It's a lot of independent movies and it's just to bring awareness to things that we may not usually read about in the newspaper."

The films focus on issues such as the plight of afghan refugees, prostitution in India, gay marriage in the United States, relations between North and South Korea, and the civil war in Liberia. The films are all prestigious in their own right, but one film in particular promises to be a crowd favorite.

Mansfield added, "But I'm sure a lot of people are interested in 'Born into Brothels', because it was a 2005 Academy Award winner and that had best documentary. I've seen them already and they're both very powerful movies."

She also said, "The festival opens Thursday night, 21st and it runs 21, 22, 23 so Thursday Friday Saturday and again the following weekend on the 28th 29th and 30th and tickets are six dollars for general admission and $3 for students and you can buy them at the Bestseller locations at the Guam Premier Outlets and the Micronesia mall, as well as Java Junction at the Agana Shopping Center and they also have some at the University at the second floor of the Humanities Building

So, if you're interested in an affordable, enjoyable night out, don't miss this year's films. If you'd like further information you can call 735-2882.
