Rev & Tax warns of surge in IRS notices sent to Guam residents
The Department of Revenue & Taxation is urging residents to be vigilant after seeing a recent spike in Guam taxpayers receiving unexpected notices from the Internal Revenue Service. According to Rev & Tax, these letters claim that individuals either owe federal taxes or failed to file their individual income tax return.
But by law, Guam residents only file and pay their individual income taxes locally — not with the IRS.
Rev & Tax is advising anyone who receives one of these notices to visit the agency’s Income Tax Branch in Barrigada Heights for assistance. Staff will verify whether the IRS correspondence is legitimate and issue an official tax filing certification, stamped with the department’s seal. That certification should then be submitted to the address listed in the IRS notice.
Taxpayers must bring a valid ID along with the notice or notices they received, as the certification cannot be processed without them.
Rev & Tax says it has already contacted the IRS to raise concerns on behalf of Guam residents and will continue providing support as the federal agency works to resolve the issue.
