A multi-million dollar road construction project in the southern part of Guam has officially been completed.

The Route 5 reconstruction and widening project is a $12.9 million project funded by the Federal Highway Administration and completed by InfraTech International, LLC.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday signifying the completion of the project.

It includes the construction of a minimum of two 11-foot lanes with a 4-foot paved shoulder and a 2-foot graded shoulder.

Officials add the pavement structure was improved with a 1-inch dense-graded friction course and 5-inch hot asphalt concrete pavement over a 12-inch aggregate base, and left turn lanes were installed at the entrances to the Sumay Pay-less Market, along with a double turn lane and right turn pocket at the entrances to the Naval Facilities Marianas offices.

Additionally, drainage culverts and BMP facilities were constructed to treat pavement runoff.

“Route 5 serves our southern population and is a major artery in Guam’s transportation system. Completion of this project provides for a much safer and more efficient thoroughfare for our residents and businesses from Hagat to Malesso and back,” said Governor Lou Leon Guerrero. “We thank our partners at the Federal Highway Administration as we move to improve the roadway conditions for our entire community.”
