FBLG Middle school construction to begin after spring break

After the hard hats, the golden shovels and with the dirt now turned, construction to fix the FB Leon Guerrero Middle School has officially begun.

FBLG Principal Melissa Mafnas said, “We have been waiting, and my students, we’ve been waiting for this day to come so we’re glad today happened and we look forward to coming back to our campus.”

Officials gathered for the ground breaking ceremony Tuesday morning.

“Thanks to all of those efforts that have gone on for several years to move this project forward,” said Guam Department of Education superintendent Kenneth Swanson.

The school was forced to close in 2022. Students and staff are currently attending double sessions with Okkodo High.

Guam Education Board member Fely Angel applauded the progress, saying, “The challenges are being addressed and we can deliver to our students”

While it’s a major relief for the home of the Hawks, the home of the Sharks remains closed and is still in need of major repairs.

Lieutenant Governor Josh Tenorio admits it’ll some time before the Sharks can return to a new campus, adding the Attorney General’s withdrawal from representing GovGuam agencies adds to the delay.

He said, “And that’s an unresolved issue that remains because of the legal crisis that we are in.”

For now, the only guarantee is that FBLG Middle School will be repaired soon. Principal Mafnas hopeful it will be ready in time for the start of the new school year.
