Leaders still can't agree on site for "much needed" new hospital

The question of “What's next for a new Guam Memorial Hospital,” still lingers.

Everyone seems to agree we need one, but Adelup and the legislature can't find “common ground” on where to build it.

The latest development is a majority of senators last week failed to override the Governor's veto of Senator Chris Barnett's bill identifying Ypao Point.

Lt. Governor Josh Tenorio said the administration will continue to push for Eda Aga'ga.

Tenorio said, “Well the next is to convince more members of the legislature to pass the bill that not only authorizes the lease but also provides revenue to the Ancestral Lands Commission. That’s the second part of it. Instead of resorting to buying private commercial land which I say is a viable option, this legislation allows an investment into the Ancestral Lands Commission so that landowners that are not getting compensated for their properties or have been under-compensated can actually get something.”

The Governor issued a detailed press release that was highly critical of Barnett, blaming him for holding back site selection, and arguing that his rationale for Ypao Point was faulty.

Barnett responded saying, “It seems like every time Adelup doesn’t get their way, they send out mean press releases short on facts. It’s a shame they keep attacking me when all I'm trying to do is get a new hospital built before the existing GMH crumbles to the ground.”
