Swimmer discovered fisherman's body near Hagatna Boat Channel

A diver with the Guam Fire Department swam to the opening of the Hagatna Boat Channel. It was just before sunset Saturday when the recovery mission began. Authorities are investigating after a 40-year-old man who had gone fishing at the Paseo area was found dead underwater just before 6 p.m., Saturday.
A man who was swimming in the early evening told GFD first responders on tje scene how he found the body. "I didn't see a buoy so I said I am going to retrieve the buoy and use it. So, I took my goggles and went down there. That's when I saw it. I found him," he said.
Within minutes of first responders showing up, the diver pulled the fisherman's body up to the surface. A rescue boat then brought him to the docks at the Hagatna Boat Basin.
Nicolas Garrido, fire department's spokesperson said, "The reporting party stated that a male individual was in the water and who had drowned."
Rescue crews reclassified the case at the scene to an expired body. The Guam Police Department is investigating the incident.
When asked how long he might've been down there and what he was doing, Garrido replied, "At the time unknown. Information received was that the victim was fishing at the time."
Investigators do not suspect any foul play.
