Guam's FAS migrant population up 9% from 2013

Posted: Updated:

According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2018 Estimates of Compact of Free Association Migrants, Guam had 18,874 freely associated state migrants, an increase of 9% from 2013. That total was used to help determine the Fiscal Year 2019 Compact Impact funds distribution amounts.

The U.S. Department of Interior announced it was releasing the rest of the this year's funds for Guam and other states and territories.

Guam's Compact funds total $16,835,958. However, a portion of that was released to Guam earlier in the Fall of 2018 to support Guam’s public school Leaseback Program.

“We are thankful to Congress for providing these funds,” DOI Assistant Secretary Doug Domenech said. “Given that the resources do not meet the needs as outlined by the most impacted jurisdictions, Guam and Hawai’i, Interior has sought other ways to help mitigate Compact Impact."

One example, he said, was providing funding to the Mañe’lu and Micronesian Resource Center One Stop Shop. In April, DOI announced it would give $267,014 the group and partners with the Guam Trades Academy to provide workforce development training focused on construction and related trades in support of the U.S. military build-up on Guam.
