Peace Officers Memorial Day honors those who paid the ultimate sacrifice

Posted: Updated:

In commemoration of "Peace Officers Memorial Day" the Guam Police Department held its annual memorial service at the Hagatna Precinct to honor its fallen heroes.

"This is the annual event that police week centers around this key event today," Police Chief Steve Ignacio said. "We'd like to thank all the families and friends and fellow law enforcement officers that are coming out and showing their support we must never forget those that gave the ultimate sacrifice by giving up their lives to defend our island and our freedoms."

As the Hagatna Precinct prepares to close because of plans to open a new headquarters in Sinajana, decisions are being made as to what to do with the Peace Officers monument.

"We are currently in the process of looking at plans to see how we can possibly relocate this monument or build something different it will be based on input from stakeholders such as the families to see if they want to continue this moment or want something new," Ignacio said. "But definitely we do respect the wishes of their family because they're the reason why we are here they're loved ones gave up their lives."

A total of 17 of Guam's law enforcement officers have died while in the line of duty.
