The Guam Department of Education giving students a taste of test of what could be on the menu next school year.

Guam Department of Educations students are some the decision makers on what's on public school menus.

At JQ San Miguel this morning, they got to taste test possible menu items for next year prepared by Sodexo and cafeteria ladies.

Redefining cafeteria food, the menu featured chicken taquitos, mac and cheese, fish sticks, chicken nuggets and everybody's favorite pizza. The slice got the thumbs up from Island Board of Governing Students' Devin Duque.

"I give this a 10 out of 10," he said.

Last year, the department had parents and staff taste test possible new dishes, but this year they went with the people actually eating cafeteria food - students.

"It's a really good idea to have students we have students from elementary students from middle school and students from high school," Duque said.

Students were given score sheets to rate dishes. One of the big hits - garlic cheese bread, Nikki San Agustin, another IBOGS member said.

"It tastes really good," she said. "It's like it's not so overbearing that the garlic flavor takes over but you can taste everything the bread the cheese the garlic. It's a really good combination."

All the dishes were cooked up according to USDA guidelines for school food nutrition. GDOE Food and Nutrition Services Management head Shawn Monforte said the department will look at which dishes students liked and then work with Sodexo and GDoe in house kitchens to meet in the middle with new menu items.

In addition to this morning's tasting, students, parents and staff members can take the GDOE school meal survey:
