Confirmation hearing held for Port board appointee Kamia Dierking

Posted: Updated:

The newest appointee to the Port Authority of Guam's board, GTA manager Kamia Dierking, breezed through her confirmation hearing Tuesday. The Port has drawn a lot of scrutiny lately, on issues ranging from the renewed controversy over the firing of seven employees for an alleged illegal workers compensation payment, and continuing litigation over a multi-million dollar arbitration award.

Dierking has pledged to approach each issue with an open mind, and Sen. Therese Terlaje said the legislature is counting on it.

"I know that I will work with the board and respect the decisions," Dierking said. "But I also want to understand and give myself some time to understand the issues prior to making any type of judgment on anything. So I think that's the one thing, I'm not afraid to slow down and really question and understand before I make any decisions."

"Because of the issues at the port that are ongoing we want transparency, and we're relying on you, it's you, the board members," Terlaje said. "The director has a duty, but it's the board members who we're going to look to ensure that the employees of the port are doing what we expect of them."

Dierking's nomination, along with a host of others, could be voted on during next week's legislative session.
