Archdiocese will file bankruptcy papers on Jan. 16

Posted: Updated:

The Archdiocese of Agana has announced the big day. Next week - Jan. 16 - is when they plan to file Chapter 11 reorganization.

Bankruptcy comes in light of the nearly 200 clergy sexual abuse lawsuits.

Guam would be one of over two dozen other dioceses and religious orders in the U.S. mainland to do this in the last 15 years.

In a statement from Archbishop Michael Byrnes, he asks everyone to, "keep focused on the mission of the Church during this time and trust that our Lord is with us as we do what is necessary to tend to the victims of clergy sexual abuse in our diocese and making things right in our Church."
