NWS Closely Monitors Tropical Depression East-Southeast of Majuro

Posted: Updated:

The National Weather Service (NWS), Guam Weather Forecast Office is closely monitoring a newly developed tropical depression east-southeast of Majuro.

As of 7 a.m., the system was located near latitude 4.9 degrees north and longitude 174.0 degrees east, about 240 miles southeast of Majuro and 2,075 miles east-southeast of Guam, moving northwest at 15 mph with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph. A tropical storm watch is in effect for Majuro and Kwajelein in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, meaning damaging winds of 39 mph or more are possible within 36 to 48 hours.

There are no watches or warnings in effect for Guam or the CNMI.

Although the tropical depression poses no direct threat to Guam or the Marianas at this time, the current track brings the system to our region later in the week. NWS advised there is still quite a bit of uncertainty as to the track, timing, and strength, but it will be watched as it moves west-northwestward.

It is still early to tell what impact, if any, it will have on Guam or the Marianas but NWS will continue to monitor closely for any developments

While there is no immediate threat to Guam or the Marianas at this time, the Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) will continue to monitor the system closely with guidance from NWS and provide updates as needed.
