Team Guam Basketball heading to Thailand for qualifier

Team Guam is gearing up for the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Pre-Qualifiers Eastern Region in Thailand. Competition for the tournament takes place November 26th to December 1st. Guam takes to the court for the opening game against Fiji, a team the national squad is pretty familiar with.

EJ Calvo, Head Coach, said, "We like that as game 1because we've seen them before. We beat them for the Gold last Pacific Games and we know they are going to be tough. This is the opportunity that we've never been given before as an island to take on some of the top teams in Asia and prove ourselves. We prove ourselves in this tournament and we expect to be in the A Division next year playing against the top teams in the world."

The top 3 teams from each group will advance to the second round of the tournament. Team Guam was drawn to Group B where they will also face Singapore and host country Thailand.

Calvo added, "Most of our talent that we are working with on Guam are playing the 1, 2 and 3 position. The guard positions. We have post players that are playing in Australia and also back in the U.S and once we unite the team and fill all of the positions we'll be solid."

Guam is currently unranked will be going up against professional players who hoop it up for a living. This will definitely open the door for our younger players and possibly the women's national team.

Will Stinnett with Team Guam said, "We got guys playing pro that lived here or were born here so hopefully w can open the doors up to scouts and everybody else in the region to see the talent that Guam has especially at the guard position. The younger kids coming up this is a building block for them when they grow up where they are already competing against the top nations here and the top countries in the region.

"Hopefully they can take the next step to play pro and the same thing for the women's."
