Startup Weekend V lets you build great things

Posted: Updated:

Startup Weekend V is a 54-hour  weekend event, during which groups of developers, business managers, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more pitch ideas for new  startup companies, form teams around those ideas, and work to develop a working prototype, demo, or presentation.

Learn, network, and startup. Startup Weekend V is taking place this weekend, November 110th and 11th. It is the ideal environment for startup magic to happen. Surrounded by smart, passionate people, and with the best tools and approaches at your disposal, you'll take giant leaps towards creating a business, becoming a founder, and connecting with the right people.

Denise Mendiola is the Acting Network Director for the Pacific Islands Small Business Development Center. She said, "This weekend will be about 54 hours worth of entrepreneurship activities by folks who want to pitch their business idea, they will be forming teams, they will learn a little bit more about how to put a business plan together, and how to pitch their idea."

According to Mendiola, on Saturday, those in attendance will also have the opportunity to work with mentors who are business leaders in the community. "Come Sunday, they are going to take their ideas and put it in a pitch plan presentation and they will be presenting it in front of judges. They have an opportunity to win prizes, from many of our sponsors that are here this year, including QuickBooks boot camp and a bunch of other stuff," Mendiola said.

Prizes that is perfect for them in order to start their business right away. And with this being the fifth installment of StartUp Weekend, she says she continues to see it thrive especially with it being spearheaded by the University of Guam Entrepreneur Society.

She said, "They've done it since day one, since the first year and so it's really made up of students- its student driven. What they do it put together the plan to be able to gather people in the community and students who are interested in starting a business and wrap around a lot of resources for them so they have an opportunity to feel like an entrepreneur, learn from entrepreneurs and hopefully, start their business."

As to what Mendiola would say to encourage people to check out Startup Weekend? "The founders of Google started on a napkin with friends and they pitched their idea to somebody. So you just never know unless you try," she stated.
