Two lawyers square-off for coveted seat of Guam attorney general

Posted: Updated:

The race to become Guam's next attorney general is between first time candidate Leevin Camacho, and former AG Doug Moylan.

KUAM caught up with both candidates who took time to vote on Super Tuesday.

"It's been fun so far," Camacho said. "We've started up in Yigo, voted up in Dededo, so we're making our way down south."

His opponent Moylan, also voted in Dededo.

"I'm feeling optimistic, hopeful, and respectful of the fact that today we're bringing this to a close, and the people of Guam get to use their democratic right," he said.

Moylan said he brings experience to the election as Guam's first attorney general.

"Guam's AG is unique," he said. "I served it in 2003-2006. The attorney general doesn't go into court and make nice with people...they're taking away people's freedom that are accused of wrongdoing by juries, and they're supposed to do justice."

As a first time candidate, Camacho wants the opportunity to address public safety.

"This is the time, I'm 40 years old, I got two young kids, this is the home I want to leave for them, and it just felt right," he said. "I think you need to be really tough on violent criminals, we've seen a rush or spike in violent crimes. We need to make sure we punish those type of offenders to the fullest extent of the law."
