Outraged residents hold peaceful protest at Magua

Posted: Updated:

Several dozen demonstrators staged a peaceful protest Saturday outside the gates of the future Marine base in Dededo. They are supporting the Historic Preservation Board's call for a pause in construction at an ancient settlement site known as Magua.

Concerns were sparked after a recent unannounced visit by board member Dave Lotz, who reported what he says was a massive clearing at Magua. The Preservation Board said it was working on a way to preserve a 1-acre site while it comes up with ideas for an "interpretive program" to explain and promote its historical and cultural significance. The Protest was meant as a show of support, and organizer Dr. Michael Bevacqua says it was also a message to the military.

"We have to make clear that we are watching them, that if they destroy, if they disturb, if they desecrate, we can't blame them, they're doing what they do. It's their own interests. But if it's in our interests to protect to defend that, then we need to make ourselves known," said Bevacqua.

The Navy has preserved Latte stones found during the clearing process, and has said it is willing to provide them for display at an off-base site.
