Dededo beautifies with Arbor Day tree planting

Posted: Updated:

All month long, the Department of Agriculture's Forestry Division and the Department of Parks and Recreation will celebrate Arbor Day with tree planting events scheduled throughout the island. Today, they were in Dededo.

This morning the rain stopped, the clouds parted and the sun made an appearance just in time for the annual Arbor Day tree planting event held at the skate park in Dededo. Matthew Sablan, director of the Department of Agriculture, said planting native trees is significant because it preserves our island's natural resources.

"[The] purpose of that is because of habitat, erosion control, fire prevention, even for beautification," he said.

Additional help came from federal and government partners, students from Wettengel Elementary School and Simon Sanchez High School and even the Lt. Governor of Guam.

Also in attending today's event was Christine Camacho Fejeran with the Forestry and Soil Resources Division

"We're planting the da'ok trees and those are the ones you'll see along Marine Corps Drive," she said. "And we're planting yo'go- these majestic big blue limestone forest trees."

Over the weekend, the first tree planting was held at the Manell watershed. Fejeran said it was amazing, with 200 volunteers showing up and over 4,000 trees planted.

And while there are other tree planting events scattered throughout the month, she invites the island community to come out to the big Trick or Trees planting event, which will wrap up Arbor month. It will be held on Oct. 27 in Merizo.

"It's about a 1,000 native plants that we'll be planting in the Manell watershed in Merizo, so it's the other side of As Gadao," Fejeran said. "And it's another beautiful hike. You will never see this view, this viewscape of Guam unless you come to the tree planting."

The site for the Tricks or Trees can only be accessed through private property , so it's definitely a treat for the public.

"Is a couple times a year opportunity and we encourage you to come out with your families," Fejeran said. "This is also a service learning event so should you have high school students or students who need to get community service hours in, this is the one you want to take them to."
