Emergency calls were pouring in to help get those attempting to get into the shelters late Monday, even happening even during the height of Typhoon Mangkhut. One police officer posted at a local Dededo high school went above and beyond to assist a family of five safely inside.

Mangkhut hit the Marianas, with some even going outside to test the strength of the storm. But, the strong winds and heavy rain is no joke. More than 300 people made their way to Okkodo High, seeking shelter.

Guam Police Department officer Angelo Bueno worked the front door at the Home of the Bulldogs, with our cameras capturing the patrolman doing the unexpected.  "We had a situation where a female came at the peak of the storm where it was getting window and had four kids in the car with her husband," he recalled.

Bueno walked outside multiple times braving the heavy winds, saying, "I just want to make sure her family was together and not stuck out there. Bringing the kids in, I had to keep them away from the direction of rain so it doesn't hit their face. I was using my back as a shield to bring them in."

This officer going above and beyond the badge to get Francine Cruz's family safely inside. They were forced to head to the shelter after the winds caused damage to their home. "My dad's room was leaking and the top was caving so we just left," she explained.

She, along with the dozens inside the northern storm shelter, braced for the storm's closest approach. The sound of the wind and rain coming from outside is just one of the many things people had to deal with overnight including the spot outages, with Okkodo High running on emergency power. Many waited it out, going to sleep and trying to get comfortable as the storm passed.

"I feel safe and scared at the same time - nervous," continued Cruz, "it's our first time."

During the chaos, many also showing gratitude for the help being given, like Cruz who shared a sentiment for Officer Bueno, saying, "I thank him for bringing my kids in because the wind was very strong and I felt like I was going to fly away with the bags. He's a hero. Thank you so much."

Shying from any attention, the appropriately-named Bueno said, "It comes with the job...when it comes to the Guam Police Department and the Guam Fire Department, we always respond."

It's a job that Officer Bueno is all too familiar with to ensure his community is safe during and after the storm.
