Typhoon Mangkhut on track to pass through Marianas

Posted: Sep 09, 2018 6:01 PM +10:00 Updated:

Leading Sunday evening’s heavy weather briefing was National Weather Service Emergency Warning Coordinator Meteorologist Chip Guard who announced that the closest point of approach for Typhoon Mangkhut to Guam is Monday night, but Guard warns it doesn’t mean that’s when we will see the worst conditions; it could be after the typhoon passes.

He added that when comparing multiple weather models Typhoon Mangkhut could pass close to Guam, but if the current northward deviation continues it could pass closer to Tinian and Saipan. The typhoon, he says, is moving at a faster clip at 23 miles per hour.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s been forecasted at this time for Monday

3:00pm – 4:00pm: onset of 39mph winds

6:00pm – 7:00pm: onset of sustained winds of 58mph

9:00pm: onset of 74mph winds

Maximum sustained winds predicted: Category 1, but there could be a shift back to the south which could bring Category 2 or 3 conditions to Guam.

Additionally, during this evening’s heavy weather briefing Guam Homeland Security Advisor George Charfauros announced that shelters will open at 6:00pm. The island will also be placed in Condition of Readiness (COR)2 at 7:00pm. He added that we anticipate being placed in Condition of Readiness (COR)1 at 4 o’clock Monday morning.

COR2 means that a typhoon is expected to hit the island within 24 hours.

COR1 means that a typhoon is expected to hit the island within 12 hours. Only emergency traffic should be on the roads at this time and everyone should stay indoors.

Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency are also on Guam.
