COR3 Declared for Guam

Guam is now in Condition of Readiness (COR3). This means damaging winds of 39-57 mph are expected within 48 hours. However you should anticipate the onset of damaging winds as early as Monday night. Island residents are urged to immediately begin preparations.

 When Tropical Storm Mangkhut makes its closest appoint of approach to Guam on Tuesday around 12:00noon it could be in the form of a Category 4 typhoon. Worst case scenario is a Category 5 typhoon.

  • Category 4 Typhoon is referred to as a “Very Strong Typhoon” with maximum sustained winds of 130-156 and peak gusts of 165-198 mph.
  • Category 5 Typhoon is referred to as a “Devastating Typhoon” with maximum sustained winds of 157-194 mph and peak gusts of 199-264 mph. A Category 5 typhoon has the ability to be life-threatening to those that do not prepare in advance.

Earlier this evening Guam Homeland Security/ Office of Civil Defense announced that on Monday there will be no schools for Guam Department of Education students because shelters will open for people that need a safe place to ride out the typhoon.

GHS/OCD advises that substandard housing absolutely WILL NOT be able to withstand the expected typhoon force winds.

The following schools have been designated as shelters, starting Monday:

Northern Shelters:

o             Astumbo Elementary School

o             Maria Ulloa Elementary School

o             Machananao Elementary School

o             Upi Elementary School

o             F.B. Leon Guerrero Elementary School

Central Shelters:

o             Carbullido Elementary School

o             George Washington High School

Southern Shelters:

o             M.U. Lujan Elementary School

o             Merizo Elementary School

o             Inarajan Middle School

o             Talofofo Elementary School

o             Harry S. Truman Elementary School
